Segments are great for setting up your customer lifecycle targeting and delineating levels/types of customers. Before you can segment your users, Appcues needs to have data. Learn what data you should send to Appcues here and keep reading to learn how to segment your users.

New Users

This can be accomplished using a “First Seen At” property for the user. This property is generated automatically by Appcues the first time the user is identified by your installation.

Active Users

This can be accomplished using a “Last Seen At” property for the user. This property is generated automatically by Appcues with the last time a user was seen.

International Users

If your app is multi-language, it's helpful to target users according to their language. You can use our default Last browser language or you can send Appcues a property that tracks a users' locale.

Role Type

There are contents only certain users can see (eg, adding a teammate), so experiences can be targeted specifically to users who can actually complete a certain action.

Internal/External Users

It's helpful to create segments of internal users for testing purposes. You can also use it to exclude your content from these users.

Short list of users

On occasion, you may need a one-time list for a flow. If your list contains fewer than 1000 values, you can create your segment using the condition "is one of'". We strongly recommend only using “is one of” condition for a list of only a few hundred items maximum.

Chaining together OR conditions consisting of blocks of 1000 item conditions will result in poor page load performance of Appcues Studio, and possible timeouts when qualifying your users to see published experiences.

If you have a long list of values (>1000) look to upload your lists into a simple and easy to qualify segment using our file upload utility.
