Overview of using the Appcues MCP server Example Appcues MCP Setup with Anthropic Claude Notes

The Appcues MCP server, currently in beta, securely connects MCP-compatible AI clients such as Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and more to your Appcues experiences and data.

The Appcues' Model Context Protocol (MCP) server enables AI assistants and Large Language Models to securely interact with your Appcues experiences and data through natural conversation. By implementing the MCP standard, Appcues MCP Server acts as a bridge between AI apps and agents and Appcues, allowing for intelligent automation and insights without requiring users to interact with a structured API.

                    • For users, the remote Appcues MCP server provides a simple and fast way to query your Appcues flows, experiences, accounts, users, segments, goals, workflows, events and other data using natural language.
                    • For developers, the remote Appcues MCP server provides secure, granular access to Appcues flows, experiences, and data through AI agents and third-party applications, and allows teams to automate reporting and integrate Appcues information into 3rd party applications.

Overview of using the Appcues MCP server

                    1. Your administrator must enable the Appcues MCP server for your Appcues account.  This can be done by contacting joey@appcues.com.
                    2. Register the Appcues MCP Server https://mcp.appcues.com/mcp with your MCP-compatible client. To do so, follow your tool's help documentation on registering an MCP server.  For example, see the docs for Claude, Chat GPT, and Cursor.
                    3. Using your MCP-compatible client, connect to the Appcues MCP Server.  You will be prompted for your Appcues credentials.  Once those credentials are validated, you will be connected.
                    4. Use your MCP Client with your Appcues account!  For example, you could ask
                      • List the Appcues MCP tools and what they do
                      • List my published flows
                      • What is my current NPS score?

                    Notes

                    • If you are not properly connected to the Appcues MCP server, you may get generic responses without any awareness of your account.
                    • The Appcues MCP server respects the same roles and permissions of your Appcues user account.
                    • If your Appcues administrator has not turned on the setting Allow Appcues enhanced AI features that will send your Users data to Appcues' LLM Provider, your MCP-comptable client will not be able to access your Users data.  This setting can be found in Appcues Studio > Settings > Appcues AI > Enhanced AI features
                    • At the time of this writing, Anthropic Claude only supports connecting to remote MCP Servers from their desktop app and their website, not via their mobile apps.
                    • At the time of this writing, Open AI Chat GPT has a few limitations as a MCP client
                      • Chat GPT only supports connecting to remote MCP Servers from their mobile app and their website chatgpt.com – not their desktop app.
                      • In the Chat GPT chat session, you must click the + button to add the Appcues connector you registered as shown below.  Only then will you be able to ask questions about your Appcues account.
                    • Appcues Captain AI uses the same tools exposed by Appcues MCP Server.  The difference is that Captain AI also leverages specialized agent rules and context and enhanced client support in Appcues Studio.
                    • New tools are being added regularly, if there is a tool missing that you need, please let us know.
