🧪 Embeds are currently in Beta 🧪

Define where your Embed appears, who sees it, and when it launches. Once targeting is configured, publish the Embed to make it live.

                    Open the targeting page

                    1. From the Embed builder, click Target & Publish in the top-right corner. This opens the Embed settings page in Appcues Studio.

                    Set Embed details

                    1. Under Details, configure:
                    • Name — The internal name for this Embed. Not visible to users.
                    • Build URL — The URL of the page where you built the Embed. Appcues uses this to load the builder when you edit it later.

                    Choose a goal

                    1. Under Goal, choose how to measure success:
                    • No goal — just track views and completions — Appcues tracks when the Embed is seen and completed, but doesn't measure against a specific outcome.
                    • A Goal is achieved — Select an existing Goal to track whether users who see the Embed go on to complete a specific action. See Set up Goals for details on creating Goals.

                    Configure the trigger

                    1. Under Trigger, set when the Embed should launch:

                    When should this experience launch?

                    • When the user reaches the page — The Embed appears as soon as the user loads a page that matches your page targeting rules. This is the default for most Embeds.
                    • When an event occurs — The Embed appears after a specific tracked event fires. Use this when you want the Embed to respond to a user action rather than a page load. See Event Triggering for more details.
                    1. Set the frequency: How often should we show this experience?
                    • Show once — The user sees the Embed a single time. After they view or close it, it won't reappear.
                    • Show every time — The Embed appears on every qualifying page load for every qualifying user. Use this for persistent, always-on content like contextual help or upgrade prompts.

                    Set page targeting

                    1. Under URL Targeting, configure where the Embed appears: Page targeting
                    • Any page — The Embed can appear on any page where the target CSS selector exists and the user qualifies.
                    • At a specific path — Restrict the Embed to specific URLs or URL patterns. Use this when the target element exists on multiple pages but you only want the Embed on certain ones.

                    Environment targeting

                    • Everywhere my Appcues embed script is installed — The Embed appears across all domains where Appcues is loaded (production, staging, etc.).
                    • Only the domains I choose — Restrict the Embed to specific domains.

Click Test URL targeting to verify your rules match the pages you expect.

For more on page targeting patterns including dynamic URLs, see Page Targeting.

                    Set audience targeting

                    1. Under Audience targeting, define who sees the Embed:
                    • All users — Every user who visits a matching page sees the Embed.
                    • Users in a Segment — Target a saved Segment. Use this when you've already defined an audience you want to reuse across experiences.
                    • Specific users — Build custom conditions using user properties, group properties, events, language, Segments, or interactions with other experiences (Flows, Pins, Banners, Checklists). Combine conditions with And/Or logic.

Click Calculate audience size to estimate how many users match your conditions, or Check eligibility to test whether a specific user qualifies. You can also click Save as Segment at the bottom of the conditions builder to reuse this audience for other experiences. For more on audience targeting options, see Audience Targeting.

                    Schedule (optional)

                    1. To publish and unpublish the Embed on a schedule, click Schedule in the top-right corner. Set a start and end time. See Schedule experiences for details.

                    Publish

                    1. Click Publish in the top-right corner, then confirm the Embed is now live. Users who match your page, audience, and trigger rules will see it on their next qualifying page load.

                    Confirm it worked

                    • The Embed status changes from Draft to Published in Studio.
                    • Visit a page that matches your page targeting rules as a qualifying user. The Embed renders at the target element.

If the Embed doesn't appear after publishing

                    • Check the debugger. Open the Appcues debugger and confirm all rows show green checkmarks. Red errors indicate an installation issue. See Installation testing.
                    • User doesn't match audience conditions. Click Check eligibility on the targeting page and enter the user's ID to verify they qualify.
                    • Page doesn't match URL targeting. Click Test URL targeting and enter the page URL to confirm it matches your rules.
                    • CSS selector not found on the page. The Embed only renders if the target element exists on the page.
                    • Trigger hasn't fired. If you set the trigger to "When an event occurs," confirm the event has been sent for that user.
                    • Environment mismatch. If you restricted to specific domains, confirm you're testing on one of those domains.
                    • Frequency set to "Show once" and already seen. If the user already saw and dismissed the Embed, it won't reappear. Test with a different user or reset the user's Appcues data.
